“Game changer” is an overused phrase when talking about travel. Except in some cases, it’s accurate. The new Savoy Palace in Funchal is one of those cases. It’s unlike anything else in Madeira, both in terms of contemporary style and in terms of size.
The style comes courtesy of Madeiran interior designer Nini Andrade Silva, who has been internationally celebrated for her work on residences and hotels. Here, she made artful plays on typical Madeira lace and floral motifs and found a harmony with the curvaceous lines of the building, which was designed by RH+ Arquitectos.
Fellow Madeirense Fátima Lopes designed the uniforms—submitting more than 100 proposals for all of the various departments—and thinks of them as a fashion collection designed exclusively for the Savoy Palace. That should tell you something about the attention to detail and the level of style.

As for size, the hotel—on the site of the former Savoy hotel, a short walk from the old town—has 352 large rooms and some epic public spaces. Most spectacular is the rooftop lounge with its two infinity-edge swimming pools, all of which have 360-degree views.
Besides that, there are four more swimming pools (not counting the private ones in the 14 pool suites), eight restaurants and bars (including a reboot of the island’s popular Galáxia bar), and one of the biggest spas in Europe. It has 11 treatment rooms, a champagne and nails bar, and water facilities galore in 3,100 square meters of space.
