The food scene in Faro is enjoying a most-welcome blossoming of restaurants serving creative and contemporary cuisine. Unquestionably, high on the list of contributors is Céu. This intimate restaurant, just a few steps north of the Praça da Liberdade, offers a unique (certainly to the Algarve) culinary combination of South American and Asian fusion. The plates are thoughtfully-crafted, beautifully-presented and delicious. And, the cost is remarkably moderate. OK, but why South American and Asian fusion? Simple answer: Chef Sky. Sky […]

Encanto has the same root word as “enchant” in Portuguese, and that’s exactly what two Michelin star chef José Avillez is hoping to do with his latest venture. It’s an enchanted place of haute cuisine, the restaurant’s announcement says, “where vegetables are celebrated as stars.” It’s Lisbon’s highest-profile project yet that’s putting vegetables front and center. (Arkhe continues to delight the city’s omnivores with its refined plant-based menus, while chef João Rodrigues took a big step with a fully vegan […]

Yes, the fish and seafood are outstanding, and no, the bifanas and pregos aren’t going anywhere. But in the past few years, Lisbon has woken up to the possibilities of vegetarian and vegan food. Whether hardcore vegan (but with an emphasis on pleasure rather than dogma) or proudly flexitarian, a new crop of restaurants are showing Lisboetas just how delicious vegetables can be. Best Restaurants in Lisbon for Vegetarians Encanto Two-Michelin star chef José Avillez goes 100% vegetarian with Encanto. […]

After chef Diogo Noronha closed his fish restaurant Pesca, his next move was in a completely different direction. Ameaça Vegetal (“plant threat”) is proudly flexitarian with a menu that’s driven by vegetables but also has room for a fried oyster sandwich and a shrimp bisque with shrimp heads. But the vegetables also impress. The menu is divided into sandwiches, soups, “not sandwiches,” and dessert. In the first category are roasted cauliflower on slow-fermentation focaccia, and eggplant tempura on the same. […]
