When the world’s first Time Out Market food hall opened, in Lisbon in 2014, it quickly became one of the city’s most popular attractions and led to brand expansions around the world. The editorial teams of Time Out magazine in cities from New York and Boston to Cape Town and Dubai chose the best chefs and restaurants in their locales to set up food stalls, and massive success followed. And so it was big news when they announced a Time Out Market in Porto in 2024.
Like the Lisbon original, the new Porto market occupies a revitalized old food market in a prime tourist location—here in the south wing of the azulejo-festooned São Bento Station—and was designed by a name-brand Portuguese architect. This time it was Porto native Eduardo Souto de Moura, who won a Pritzker Prize for an earlier project.
As per usual, the editors, writers, and critics of Porto chose the chefs and restaurateurs who would take over the 16 spaces: 14 restaurants, 2 bars, and venue with a view a glass-and-iron tower beside the building. And also as usual, the lineup is impressive.
Among the chefs announced are Ricardo Costa (two Michelin stars at the Yeatman), Rui Paula (two stars at Casa de Chá da Boa Nova), Vasco Coelho Santos (one star at Euskalduna Studio), and Rafaela Louzada (Bib Gourmand at Gruta). There are also projects from chef Nuno Castro of the respected vegetarian restaurant Fava Tonka and a return of the classic cuisine of chef Inês Diniz (ex–Casa Aleixo). Apart from fine dining, there are also new outposts from popular pizzerias, bakeries, and burger joints around town.
In the center of the space there are communal tables for visitors to enjoy their food. And the Porto food hall has something that the Time Out Market in Lisbon doesn’t: a courtyard filled with outdoor seating, whose central tables can be used for food from any of the restaurants in the hall.
