It comes as no surprise that this atmospheric hotel occupies a palace in the historic heart of Portugal that dates from the year 1884. But it’s not some preserved-in-amber period piece. Rather is has all the refined eclecticism that the Torel Boutiques hotel group has become known for with their other properties across Portugal.
Each of the 12 rooms at Torel 1884 has a particular theme related to the Portuguese-speaking world. On the top floor, they all relate to Asia, including the gorgeous, oceanic-blue Porcelain room, with its chinoiserie and enormous bathtub next to the golden-framed bed. Below, the reference is South America, where the Exotic Wood room displays the vibrant colors of the Amazon and the Exotic Birds room has stunning wallpaper. There are 11 more apartments in a nearby building.
It’s obvious that a huge level of care and creativity went into everything. It’s a project from some of Portugal’s best artistic, architectural, and artisinal talent, with the goal of enhancing the natural beauty of the building with handmade tassels and bespoke wooden fittings.
As a small hotel, it has no formal restaurant. Rather, the Bartolomeu Bistro & Wine is a casual spot for small plates and a good selection of wines by the glass.
