It’s no wonder this hotel is called White. When João Reis, who also owns the Santa Bárbara resort on São Miguel’s other coast, opened his second property, he was committed to the idea of a non-distracting visual language.
The primary color in the décor is white, and many of the materials are so natural they appear to have been just recently picked up off the ground. The hotel—which occupies a stone building that was once a crumbling old summer home integrated into a winery—is oriented on the side of a cliff so that each of the nine suites and two freestanding villas has a killer view of the Pacific below.
While the palette is neutral, it’s not sterile. There are organic elements everywhere: rope, driftwood, cotton, volcanic stone, wicker, cotton, and living plants. Many of the rooms have direct access to the wide terrace and perfectly sited, heated saltwater pool.
The restaurant, which is open only to hotel guests, serves island classics like garlicky grilled limpets and squid rice along with more adventurous fare. The cooking is straight-ahead and the open-air dining room is delightfully simple. As always at this chic hideaway, the attention goes to where it belongs: outside.
