The magic at Antiqvvm starts with its location. The restaurant occupies the old Solar do Vinho do Porto (port wine estate), a gracious old building with prime views over the Douro River. The emblematic setting is a fitting setting for the cuisine of chef Vitor Matos, which combines classic Portuguese dishes and ingredients with touches of international modernity.
Matos, who was awarded a second Michelin star at Antiqvvm in 2024, began his culinary career in the 1990s, when he attended the cooking and pastry course at Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Despite opportunities elsewhere in Europe, he returned to Portugal and worked his way through some of the most distinguished kitchens in the north of the country.
Here, at his flagship, he offers two tasting menus of eight courses each. These change daily, but in general, the Organic menu is vegetarian—with dishes like tofu and tamarind with pumpkin, shiso, and olive oil, and Azeitão cheese with peas, morels, flowers, butter, and sage—while the signature Sensory Moments menu is fully omnivorous. Its sample dishes include duck foie gras and rhubarb with vanilla, balsamic from Modena, and bolos lêvedos (Portuguese muffins), and red mullet and Oscietra caviar with sea urchin, cauliflower, and scarlet shrimp.
As befits the restaurant’s location, each menu is offered with a wine pairing that emphasizes special bottles and producers from the region.
