Bar do Fundo Beach Restaurant, Sintra

Bar do Fundo is one of those places that has such a gorgeous setting, they could cut all sorts of corners on the food and people would still come. The thing is, they didn’t cut those corners.



The beautiful, light-filled restaurant beside the Praia Grande in Sintra is the outgrowth of a surf-shack-style sandwich bar that the Cotta brothers set up as part of the beach lifestyle. Now it has some of the trimmings of fine dining, but they still focus on their grandmother’s recipes.

Even by high Portuguese standards, she must have been a great cook. Standout dishes include the grilled octopus with potatoes and garlic, and the tender tuna steak with coriander rice and green vegetables. For Sunday lunches, there’s a popular cozido à portuguesa, a typical stew made with many kinds of meat.
