Contemporary artist Eva Claessens presents new works at the CRIATURA cultural space, at the Verride Palácio de Santa Catarina Hotel in Lisbon. The exhibition, entitled “Eva Claessens and Friends – With Love from Nature,” showcases the artist’s customary organic and ethereal style. Complimenting the show are works by Claessens close creative friends, including guest of honor, Julian Lennon. The exhibition runs through 23 November.
Belgium-native Claessens creates in multiple medium, including paintings, drawings, sculptures and ceramic pieces. Her art is human-scale (or even larger), as she draws from real models, always with utter respect for nature. Through seemingly simple, yet mesmerizing, lines and the faintest of color shading, she allows her pieces room to breathe on their own, inviting viewers to “complete” the context through their own visual interpretation.
The English musician, artist and photographer Julian Lennon was the first person Claessens thought of when developing the show. Their relationship as friends and artists touches on many commonalities, such as ideas and thoughts about life, architecture, design, and work and creation in all possible forms. For this event, Lennon contributes his poetic view in the form of a collection of large and small-scale photographs, as well as a number of prints, blended with Claessens’ own artwork, to concoct an unexpected yet enticing outcome.
More friends filling out the atmosphere of the show, include renowned Argentine photographer Ricardo Labougle and his partner, who will shoot Claessens within the exhibition space, creating a time-specific installation, which will eventually stand alone as separate artistic works. As well, Kees Eijrond, a cultural entrepreneur and owner of Verride Palácio de Santa Catarina, accents the space with intricate flower arrangements of his own creation, embedding beauty and reality into the nature-themed show.
CRIATURA is located in the lower level of the Verride Palácio de Santa Catarina hotel, with a separate entrance into the gallery.
