Discover INDIA at Palácio Duques de Cadaval in Évora

This summer, visitors to the Palácio Duques de Cadaval in Évora can embark on a journey to India—without ever leaving the Alentejo.

On display through October 25, 2026, INDIA is one of the most ambitious international art exhibitions presented in Portugal in recent years. Bringing together 20 artists and more than 90 works, the exhibition transforms the historic palace into a vibrant exploration of contemporary Indian creativity, where ancient traditions and modern artistic expression meet in unexpected ways.

What makes INDIA particularly compelling is its diversity. Rather than focusing on a single style or movement, the exhibition presents a wide spectrum of artistic voices. Visitors will encounter meditative tantric paintings, striking contemporary portraits, works inspired by tribal traditions, and powerful pieces that explore spirituality, identity, mythology, and everyday life in modern India.

Among the highlights are the intricate works of Jangarh Singh Shyam and Jivya Soma Mashe, artists whose imagery is deeply rooted in tribal storytelling and animistic traditions. Large-scale portraits by Parag Sonarghare blend the precision of hyperrealism with echoes of classic Bollywood poster art, while the works of Sosa Joseph and Siji Krishnan offer distinctive perspectives on contemporary Indian society and the role of women within it.

The exhibition also features rarely seen tantric paintings created by anonymous artistic families, where geometry, color, and symbolism blur the lines between abstraction and meditation. Together, these works reveal the remarkable diversity that exists within India itself—a country where centuries-old traditions continue to coexist alongside rapid modernization.

Set against the backdrop of one of Portugal’s most beautiful aristocratic residences, INDIA offers more than an art exhibition. It is an opportunity to discover the many cultures, stories, and artistic traditions that shape one of the world’s most fascinating countries.
