The Algarve is justifiably famous for its beaches, so it’s little wonder that many of the region’s big luxury hotels focus on the Atlantic Ocean, the dramatic cliffs, and the golden stretches of sand. Then there’s a slew of five-star golf resorts in the center of the region—particularly around the Golden Triangle of Vilamoura, Vale do Lobo, and Quinta da Lago—a clutch of surfer-chic spots along the western edge, and a crop of rustic-luxe farmhouses in the eastern reaches.

But sometimes you’re in the mood for something else. That’s where the Algarve’s design-forward, high-luxury boutique hotels come in. From a palace in Tavira in the east to a sand-colored resort on the west coast beside Aljezur, these are hotels that entice with their aesthetic sensibility, refined service, and high-end gastronomy. The beach is still quite close by, if you want, but these small hotels remind us that there’s more to life than sun and sand.

Palácio de Tavira, Tavira

Don’t be alarmed by the Palácio in the name. Although parts of the year-old Palácio de Tavira occupy the onetime residence of a noble family, the hotel is anything but opulent or stuffy. Rather, the 18th-century main building, along with the newer extension, feels airy, bright, and even a little bit beachy, with paintings of wading birds in the bedrooms and macrame wall hangings in the restaurant. The 20 rooms in the original palace have high ceilings, restored wood floors, and in some cases, small balconies overlooking the hotel’s central courtyard. In the back, the Medina building houses 16 rooms with ceramic flooring, natural materials like rattan, and a design that uses light and shadow as architectural elements. There are two small swimming pools and sundecks atop the roof here, while the garden below has the entrance to the spa, which uses locally sourced sea salts, essential oils, and native herbs in its treatments.

Colégio Charm House, Tavira

The semi-retirement project for a Portuguese couple who wanted a slower life after busy careers, Colégio Charm House occupies an 18th-century manor house in the center of Tavira. The “colégio” refers to a chapter of the building’s history, when it was a male boarding school for Nossa Senhora das Mercês and later part of the local secondary school. The owners supplied the “charm” in the form of a restoration that preserved the original walls and stones, and a lighthearted interior design that plays with color, contemporary art, and whimsical collections from the family’s world travels. Some of the rooms are romantic, gossamer-draped aeries for couples, while others were designed with families in mind and have sleeping lofts, bunk beds, and other kid-friendly setups. Some rooms have private pools, and the others share a larger one in the hotel’s garden.

Octant Vila Monte, Olhão

Just outside of artsy Olhão in Moncarapacho, Octant Vila Monte has a lot of the farmhouse sensibility that’s taken root throughout the hills of the eastern Algarve. But it also has all the trappings of a contemporary five-star hotel, including 55 rooms and suites that span 20 categories and configurations, separate areas for families and adults, two restaurants that draw from the onsite gardens, a chef’s table experience, and 24-hour services. There’s a full roster of wellness services, from aromatherapy massages to shamanic voyages, as well as private yoga and Pilates classes. Although the details are still under wraps, a slate of improvements is expected to be unveiled later this year.

Pousada Palácio Estoi, Faro

After a major renovation several years ago, Pousada Palácio Estoi has the kind of over-the-top opulence that’s usually found in major cities, or in historic royal retreats like the palaces of Sintra. In the Algarve, it stands out with its grandeur: an 18th-century palace whose original features were preserved as it was transformed. It’s a place of lavish great rooms with elaborate carved ceilings, antique furnishings, a reception area in the old Luís XV style, and a museum-like exhibition area that traces the history of the Algarve and its Roman, Islamic, and classical influences. The Neoclassical, Neo-Rococo, and Art Nouveau styles of the public spaces are balanced by the contemporary simplicity of the 63 rooms and suites. Outside, there are French-style gardens and an outdoor swimming pool with a view of the ocean and the mountains, and the palace’s original kitchen has been transformed into the Visconde restaurant, which serves contemporary takes on local fare.

Vila Joya, Albufeira

Since 1982, the intimate Vila Joya has felt more like a home than a hotel—but it’s a highly polished hideaway, a contrast to the farmhouse chic that’s swept through the Algarve in more recent years. Now managed by the original owner’s daughter, Vila Joya remains a celebration of one family’s love for art and detail. The four rooms and nine suites each have a distinctive design, ranging from the Japanese-influenced 1001 Nights suite with its square wooden soaking tub, to the fusion of Portuguese contemporary design and precious antiques in the Royal Suite Alegria. But its strongest calling card is its Michelin two-star restaurant, where Austrian chef Dieter Koschina has served a different menu every night of operation since its opening in 1991 in a dining room and terrace with a front-row seat over the Atlantic Ocean.

Bela Vista Hotel & Spa, Portimão

The gorgeous palacete at the heart of Bela Vista began life in 1918 as the private summer residence of a canning industrialist from an aristocratic family. More than a century of history’s twists and turns later, it’s the center of a Relais & Châteaux hotel with an enviable location atop the cliffs of Praia da Rocha, just outside bustling Portimão. Many of the eclectic, Neo-Gothic details have been retained, such as the Foyer of Tiles between the living room and the staircase. Its original panels depict episodes from Portugal’s literary masterwork, The Lusíadas, and celebrate the country’s era of Discoveries. Most of the hotel’s 38 rooms occupy much newer buildings and have a beachy chic vibe with blue-and-white stripes and botanical prints. It’s also a fine-dining destination, with the Michelin-starred Vista, a showplace for chef João Oliveira’s deft touch with the fish and seafood that come in each day from fishing ports along the coast.

Casa Mãe, Lagos

Despite its location in the heart of Lagos, Casa Mãe feels like a secluded refuge—but one that’s trendy enough to have a curated Spotify playlist on its website’s landing page. The hotel began as a micro-boutique guesthouse in a 19th-century family estate within the city’s 16th-century walls and has grown over the years to include four buildings. The suites in the main house have a historic feel, thanks to antique furniture sourced from all over Portugal. Several freestanding cabanas have a boho-chic vibe, plus private patios for sunbathing and outdoor showers, while the larger Villa Paiol, which can accommodate up to six adults, has a more timeless elegance. The newest building, Jogo da Bola, combines contemporary architectural minimalism with local crafts. The restaurant, Orta, lives up to its farm-to-table billing by using products grown within the hotel’s courtyards and the owners’ nearby permaculture farm (home to some 200 chickens for the breakfast eggs), where they also offer workshops.

Praia do Canal, Aljezur

Opened in 2023 by a Madeira-based holding company, Praia do Canal Nature Retreat is the first five-star resort in the Costa Vicentina, and with 56 rooms, it’s likely the biggest in this region on the Algarve’s west coast. But it’s worth noting that the developers had permission to build about twice as many; they opted instead to keep it relatively small. Those 56 rooms are surrounded by a valley that stretches over more than 500 acres down to a nearly deserted beach, and their layout on the central hotel campus evokes a moody Moroccan city. It’s the work of Portuguese architect João Favila Menezes, from Atelier Bugio, who was asked to develop a low-impact project inspired by the colors of the coast’s cliffs. It has all the resort amenities, including an infinity pool, a spa, a very good restaurant that aims to offer a contemporary twist on traditional Portuguese fare, a pool bar with light meals in summer, and activities galore, ranging from picnics on the property to jeep tours of the region’s most stunning corners.
