At Mesa Farta in Tavira, celebrated Algarvian chef João Viegas brings years of international culinary experience back to his hometown. Traditional Portuguese recipes, outstanding regional ingredients, and a healthy dose of creativity come together in a dining experience that is sophisticated yet refreshingly unpretentious.
Tucked into a quiet residential neighborhood, away from Tavira’s bustling tourist center, Mesa Farta occupies a former storage warehouse, beautifully renovated into a bright, spacious, and contemporary restaurant. The airy main dining room features clean architectural lines, understated furnishings, and generously spaced tables. At its heart is a large open kitchen, where guests can watch Viegas and his team at work. A more intimate dining area and outdoor terrace provide additional seating. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with a pleasing balance of modern style and neighborhood charm.

A Celebrated Chef Comes Home
Born and raised in Tavira, João Viegas has built an impressive culinary career that has taken him well beyond the Algarve. His experience includes internationally acclaimed restaurants such as El Celler de Can Roca and Mugaritz in Spain, and Central in Lima, Peru.
Back in Portugal, he spent several years working alongside chef Leonel Pereira at the Michelin-starred São Gabriel restaurant in Almancil. It was during this period, in 2015, that Viegas earned the prestigious title of Portugal’s Chef of the Year. He later headed the kitchen at Atlântico, at Vila Vita Parc in Porches, where he further developed his passion for contemporary interpretations of Algarve cuisine.
With Mesa Farta, Viegas has returned to his hometown to cook on his own terms. His philosophy is apparent: celebrate the flavors and traditions of Portugal, source exceptional local and seasonal ingredients, and add just enough creative flair to make familiar dishes feel exciting.
Portuguese Classics with a Creative Twist
The exclusively à la carte menu moves comfortably between land and sea, with tempting starters, inventive main courses, and generous Portuguese classics designed for sharing. There’s a sense of familiarity throughout, but Viegas clearly enjoys giving traditional recipes an unexpected twist.
Ria Formosa oysters with fennel escabeche and apple offer a fresh start, while wild meagre with fried garlic, coriander, and lemon highlights the kitchen’s appreciation for local seafood. Meat lovers might be tempted by suckling pig with peppers and orange, or Iberian pork collar accompanied by dried figs and mustard.

For a more convivial dining experience, larger dishes for two celebrate the pleasures of traditional Portuguese cooking. Duck rice with smoked meats, Algarvian fish massinha, and comforting salt cod rice are familiar favorites, elevated by Viegas’s accomplished technique and thoughtful presentation. Vegetarian options and creative desserts, including rice pudding with tonka bean ice cream and torched meringue, round out the menu.
