In a luxury world increasingly dominated by scale, speed and seasonal novelty, Portuguese handbag brand Ownever is taking a decidedly different approach. Its bags are designed to last, but perhaps more importantly, so are the skills behind them.
Founded by Maria Cunha and Eliana Barros, Ownever grew from a passion for Portugal’s increasingly rare savoir-faire. Across the country, generations of artisans have mastered leatherwork, weaving, porcelain, embroidery and other traditional crafts, often beginning their apprenticeships as teenagers. Today, many of these craftspeople have no younger generation learning alongside them.
Ownever seeks them out and puts their work—and their names—at the heart of its collections. Traditional techniques are not simply decorative references to Portuguese heritage; they become integral to the design and construction of the bags themselves. Production is deliberately limited and slow, materials are carefully selected, and longevity takes precedence over trends.
The result is something approaching a living archive of Portuguese craftsmanship, expressed through contemporary luxury accessories.
Aura
The Aura (€1,200) brings together leatherwork and one of Portugal’s most recognizable artistic traditions: porcelain. Each bag features an individually hand-shaped porcelain element by Mr. Pinto, a master artisan from the Barcelos region with more than 40 years of experience. Framed in gold and incorporated into upcycled leather, the handmade porcelain ensures that every Aura is subtly different from the next.
Gunta
Perhaps the collection’s most direct connection to disappearing craftsmanship, the Gunta (€870) is woven from 100% natural wool on a traditional wooden loom. Artisan Fernando Rei, working in the northern village of Aboim da Nóbrega, learned his craft from his mother, who learned from his grandmother. Remarkably, he still weaves on his grandmother’s loom. Inspired by the Bauhaus weaving school and Gunta Stölzl, the bag pairs Fernando’s handwoven textile with a vegetable-tanned leather structure.
Amoré
There is a more personal story behind the Amoré (€590). The design originated with a drawing by a girl named Maria, one of the children who took part in the project, who imagined the perfect handbag for her mother. Ownever’s artisans transformed that simple sketch into a polished leather bag, giving the piece an appealing connection between childhood imagination, family and the hands that eventually brought the idea to life.
Repurse
With its slender proportions and vintage noir inspiration, the Repurse (€480–€510, Noir version pictured at top and below) represents the quieter side of the collection. Handcrafted from upcycled leather, its clean silhouette is deliberately removed from seasonal trends. Like the Amoré, it includes an additional shoulder strap, leather lining and discreet interior pocket, balancing practicality with Ownever’s restrained aesthetic.
Keep in mind that the craftsmanship continues right through to the unboxing. Each Ownever bag arrives in a handmade presentation box created by one of the last Portuguese artisans still practicing this rare craft, and featuring original Portuguese tile artwork by artist Salomé Vilar. Designed to be kept and treasured long after the bag is unpacked, the box becomes another small expression of the heritage Ownever is working to preserve.
