There are many excellent wineries in the Douro Valley with enotourism components and lovely little hotels attached. There is only one with some of its hotel rooms in ten enormous wine barrels. That’s Quinta da Pacheca, in Lamego.
The ten wine barrel rooms are the project of architect Henrique Pinto. Located high on the property, they have great views over the vineyards, especially from their furnished terraces.
Inside, they have all the creature comforts of luxury hotel rooms, such as plush beds and full (if compact) bathrooms. The curved walls of weathered wood add to the sense of coziness.
They’re a fine base for exploring the vineyards on your own or on a tour, dabbling in workshops in the art studio, or enjoying picnics or cooking classes.
