When people talk about the Azores, the first thing they mention is usually the nature. So it’s a little surprising that there wasn’t a luxury eco-resort in the archipelago until recently.
The Santa Barbára Eco-Beach Resort emerged as the first of its kind in 2015. (Now there are others.) It was the realization of a longtime dream of friends Rodrigo Herédia and João Reis. They share a passion for this beach and its black sand, which contrasts almost magically with the blue of the ocean and green shades of the hills.
And so, they set out to build a small resort that is well integrated into its environment. That means natural materials, sensitive architecture, and careful framing to maximize the stunning views.
Over the years, it has grown to 30 villas and studios, all with kitchenettes, living rooms and balconies with armchairs for observing the natural world. Some have large carved-stone bathtubs or Jacuzzis, and others share a heated saltwater swimming pool.
The aesthetic is soothing and earthy. The designers emphasized natural materials, particularly local cryptomeria wood, cork and bamboo.
The restaurant has a beautiful sunset view and, of courses, uses local products in the contemporary cuisine. There is an Asian twist to some of the dishes, as well as a whole menu of sushi and sashimi, including that wonderful Azorean tuna.
If you get bored admiring nature and good design, there’s plenty to do. They’ll call in therapists to give massages on a clifftop wooden deck where you can hear the sea. Alternatively, the activities center has equipment for snorkeling, stand-up paddling, surfing and kayaking.
