Sublime Comporta – Luxury Escape near the Alentejo Coast

Even as the international buzz around Comporta was growing, the area lacked a luxury hotel until Sublime Comporta came along in 2014. The rural retreat has more than lived up to its name from the beginning, and ever since then, it has continued to expand (while remaining intimate), innovate, and evolve.

Once the private estate of a prominent Portuguese family, the 17-hectare swath of land is still mostly occupied only with cork trees and umbrella pines. The main building houses six guest bedrooms, a dining room, gathering place, spa, and bar whose glass windows are inscribed with words of wisdom from Winston Churchill, Mark Twain and Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa about the pleasures of wine—designer boutique and reception area.  Eight suites occupy a nearby building, and the property is dotted with a number of villas with private pools, ranging from two to five bedrooms.

Designed by José Alberto Charrua and Miguel Câncio Martins (known for Buddha Bar and Man Ray), the public spaces and guest rooms emphasize the outdoors, with natural materials, understated tones, and floor-to-ceiling windows. In keeping with the Comporta vibe, they’re low on flash but high on comforts.

While the sophisticated little spa uses products from the cult favorite The Organic Pharmacy line, and wellness retreat series brings in top talent from around the world, it’s dining where the hotel really shines.

Chef Tiago Santos, most recently of Bar Douro in London, as well as several Michelin-starred restaurants in Portugal, took over the stoves at the Sem Porta restaurant in 2018. The menu remains long and varied, making heavy use of the 1,500-square-meter organic garden with more than 300 varieties of herbs and vegetables, as well as sustainably caught fish and pasture-fed meats. Santos also oversees the menus at the 12-seat Food Circle, an intimate, open-air dining “room” set amid the gardens.

Also among the additions are several wine tasting experiences plus a blending opportunity at the nearby partner winery Breijinho da Costa. More wellness upgrades are brewing, and there are already memorable options like private yoga classes in the villas and floating dinners on the lake
