Restaurateurs Elad Bodenstein and Itamar Eliyahuo are from Israel, but Israeli cuisine is just the start at their new restaurant in Bairro Alto, Tantura. The name comes from the fishing village where they lived before they came to Lisbon on their honeymoon and fell in love with the city.
But that village isn’t their only heritage; their origins stretch from Poland to the Middle East through the Mediterranean. So does the food at Tantura. They combine recipes and techniques from their grandmothers in Iraq, Tunisia and Romania with fresh local ingredients.
Their premise is “sharing is caring,” and everything at Tantura is meant to be shared. There are eight types of hummus, including one with minced meat and another with smoked cauliflower, and four kinds of shakshuka. The menu also includes classics like falafel, pita sandwiches, and flavorful salads, but all with international twists.
With many vegetarian and vegan dishes on the menu, Tantura is a great choice for people who prefer not to eat meat.
