Five Great Things to Love about The Vintage Hotel, Lisbon

There are five great things to love about The Vintage Hotel in Lisbon.  (OK, there are many great things, but let’s abbreviate the list in the interest of time.)  Characteristics that stand out in this unique design hotel are its mid-century vibe, comfortable luxury, location, rooftop terrace and in-room, create-your-own gin & tonics!  All combine to create a rich cosmopolitan texture to compliment your visit to Portugal’s capital city.

Mid-Century Vibe

From the first moment walking through the door and approaching the reception desk, you can’t help but feel transformed to another era.  The glamor of the 1950s and 60s are evident in the furniture, art and details selected by interior designer Daniela Franceschini.  Custom furniture pieces emulating mid-century modern design are placed in groupings in common areas for easy conversation or strewn around the hotel standing almost as objects of art themselves.  Paintings on the walls and sculptures hanging from the ceiling or standing in niches accentuate the design experience.

Comfortable Luxury

The 56 rooms are categorized as Vintage Superior (24-29sqm), Vintage Deluxe (26-31 sqm) and Vintage Corner Suites (40-50 sqm).  In addition to large space, the Vintage Castle Suite offers direct views to the São Jorge Castle. The deep color palette for the rooms follow a three-pronged “feel good” theme found throughout the hotel:  Terracotta = Play; Green = Inspire; and Blue = Relax.  Furniture pieces in the rooms, such as the bar carts and desks, are acquired from vintage markets and antique shops.  High-quality linens, thick mattresses, rain head showers all add to the comfort of the stay.

Location

The Vintage Hotel sits directly in the middle of two of Lisbon’s most popular neighborhoods.  Avenida da Liberdade just three short blocks to the east is home to Lisbon’s designer shopping.  Prada, Gucci, Armani are here as well as chic and fashionable restaurants and bars.  Just a long block to the southwest is the neighborhood of Príncipe Real.  Here, quaint boutiques, cafes, vegetarian restaurants and art galleries attract a trendy and casual crowd.  Just beyond Principe Real is Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood, Bairro Alto

Rooftop Terrace

Among all of the rooftop bars in the city, V Rooftop Bar is one of the most special.  Tropical plants and vegetation provide a garden feel.  It’s location toward the back of the building guards against obtrusive street noise.  And, its relatively smaller size makes for a more intimate experience.  Of course, the views are stunning, including a straight shot across the city to São Jorge Castle.  It’s a perfect place to relax with coffee or juice during the day, sip Aperol Spritz at sunset, or mingle with friend over cocktails at night.

Create-Your-Own Gin & Tonic

Most fine hotels these days have complimentary in-room expresso machine (as this one does), and some have complimentary bottled water (as this one also does).  Yet, the vintage Hotel is the first to offer complimentary create-your-own Gin & Tonics.  Start by opening the aromatics (such as dried lemon, fig, cinnamon, star anise) and place your desired flavors into a glass.  Pour the artisan gin, made in Portugal, over the aromatics.  Allow the flavors to infuse for a while.  Top off with tonic and ice.  Find a cozy spot in the room to listen to music, watch the view and let your stress subside.

Ready for You to Prepare

Let’s also not forget the hotel’s Blue Restaurant, featuring Portuguese cuisine made from all natural products, the Hangout Bar in the Hangout Room for hanging out, chatting or teleworking, and The Spa with water lounge, sauna and steam rooms, and full menu of massages and treatments.
