Iconic Sublime Comporta Gets a Bold New Expansion

In the decade or so since the pioneering Sublime Comporta opened its doors, other boutique hotels have been sprouting between the rice fields, pine groves, and beach dunes of Comporta. But none has quite matched Sublime’s singular character: the scent of the forest, the elemental appeal of the “Comporta cabana” architecture, the azure sweep of the biological pool that’s shared by a string of suites, and the overall feeling of intimate expansiveness.

So it was big news when the hotel more than doubled in size at the start of the 2026 summer season. The new Sand wing isn’t so much an addition as a hotel all its own, as it’s a few kilometers up the road and has its own reception and resort facilities. But it’s imbued with the same spirit that’s animated Sublime Comporta since the beginning.

Like the original property (now called the Terracotta wing), whose 23 rooms and 22 villas are shaded by towering cork oaks and umbrella pines, the new Sand wing keeps nature as its star. Its 43 villas are spread over 51 hectares, and the architects—including José Charrua, who designed the original—went to considerable lengths to preserve the trees. One roundabout exists only to divert cars around a single trunk.

Each villa has a private pool and an indoor-outdoor fireplace that beautifully frames the landscape. As with the original, the villas are individually owned, uniformly minimalist (sun-washed palettes, soft textures, sculptural forms), and available for short-term stays, either in their entirety or as single bedrooms.

As in the Terracotta wing, where the dining options include the 12-seat fire-dining counter Food Circle, a very competent main restaurant serving international fare, and a spinoff of Lisbon’s buzzy Canalha, food plays a starring role within Sand. But here it’s more international: outposts of the Monte Carlo–based Beefbar, and of Davvero, the Italian restaurant helmed by a Cipriani alum at the Sublime Lisboa hotel.

The new section is more committed to all of its offerings: a spa, multiple gyms, and tennis and padel facilities for wellness; a kids’ club and family activities for multigenerational travel; and a sparkly subterranean nightclub slated for later this summer.
