The Tivoli Palácio de Seteais hotel in Sintra began its life as a royal palace in the 18th century in the hills northwest of Lisbon. So it’s only fitting that in the 21st century, it has added an intimate wine bar meant to showcase wines from the area. The Seteais Colares DOC Wine Room offers a creative way to sample local wines and authentic Portuguese delicacies.
The Colares region, along the sea west of and including Sintra, has difficult weather, so winemakers have adopted a unique method for planting and aging. The method results in smooth complexity and vivid flavor, a mash-up of mountains and sea.
The hushed space has been furnished with prestigious decorations from the Regional Winery of Colares, including antique furniture and period photographs depicting the renowned wine producers’ history. That alone is worth a visit for tasting.
That said, if you prefer to go all in, there are options. There’s a four-course gourmet dinner menu on offer, or there’s a menu of regional petiscos. Think: Portuguese cheeses, cured ham, octopus tempura and more fresh seasonable produce prepared by the Seteais culinary team. Prices for tasting: from €25.00 per person (minimum two people); from €100£ for a dinner with wine pairings.
