For anyone who prefers the relaxed intimacy of dining at the bar to the arm’s-length formality of sitting at a table, Corrupio is a welcome addition to Lisbon’s restaurant scene. (Though the counter-dining trend is definitely gaining steam overall.) Guests have a front-row seat to watch the collective of chefs shuck Ria Formosa oysters and put the finishing touches on composed plates.
The name, Corrupio, is a Portuguese word that describes a state of constant motion, “like a roller coaster” to quote a spokesperson. But the chefs, including Daniel Ferreira (ex–Sublime Comporta, Plano, and O Frade), Rafael Pratas, Nélio Pedrosa, and Lucas Azevedo, are friendly and relaxed as they do their work.
The brief menu highlights many of Portugal’s signature dishes, albeit with a twist or two. Think pig’s ear salad, octopus salad with purple sweet potato puree, black pork, codfish, and deliciously lemony coriander rice served with the catch of the day.
The place is whimsical and relaxed, with playful artworks on the walls and on the tiles atop the dining counter. The playlist is Portuguese—chosen by humans, not algorithms, they add—and the wine list includes some unexpected bottles that you won’t find at the grocery store.
And if dining at the bar isn’t for you, there are also a few small tables by the windows and on the sidewalk outside.
