What makes a place memorable? Is it the architecture, the objects within it, or the experiences and memories we associate with it? A new exhibition at the Centro de Arte Moderna (CAM) Gulbenkian in Lisbon explores these questions through more than 100 works by Portuguese and international artists. Opening November 7, On Drawing Places (Lugares Que Se Desenham) invites visitors to consider how artists interpret and reimagine the spaces around us.

Curated by Sérgio Mah and Leonor Nazaré, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the CAM Collection, exploring the idea of “place” in its many forms. From domestic interiors and architectural structures to imagined landscapes and abstract environments, the works consider how spaces are shaped by our perceptions, experiences, and memories.
Occupying both floors of CAM’s main exhibition hall, On Drawing Places features paintings, photography, sculpture, and large-scale installations. Some works depict recognizable settings, such as houses, schools, and motels, while others explore architectural details, everyday objects, and more imaginative interpretations of space.

Highlights include Marcas (1976), a painting by Maria José Aguiar and the latest acquisition to join the CAM Collection. Several works are also making their first appearance in the museum’s galleries, including Patrícia Garrido’s large-scale installation Interior #2 (2021), Cecília Costa’s Darkest Light (2023), and Carlos Nogueira’s construction with a white floor from within (1997). A series of ten photographs by Augusto Alves da Silva captures scenes of the Algarve during the 1980s.
