Despite everything 2020 has thrown at us, ambitious restaurants have continued to open in Lisbon and around Portugal. The latest of these is OTRO (“something else,” more or less) a collaboration between much-admired chef Vitor Sobral and the luxury fashion and fragrance brand OTRO.
Hidden behind an ordinary-looking facade on a street behind Avenida da Liberdade, the dining room is opulent and low-lit with green velvet banquettes and gilded fan-shaped wall sconces. It’s the vision of OTRO Group founder Hugo Banha, who set out to dazzle the senses. Everything looks nice, everything feels nice, and of course everything smells nice.
And that’s even before the food starts arriving. Banha chose Sobral because he considers the chef to be the greatest specialist in Portuguese gastronomy. The a la carte menu includes many local classics, such as entire section devoted to bacalhau, but also luxury ingredients like 45-day aged Tomahawk beef, foie gras, truffles, and Beluga caviar.
The wine list is similarly luxurious and international, including Pêra-Manca, Chateau-Neuf du Pape, and Armand de Brignac Gold Brut Champagne.
