Porto Holocaust Museum

The Porto Holocaust Museum on Rua do Campo Alegre is the first public venue addressing the WWII-era atrocities in the Iberian peninsula.

The Holocaust is a subject that is often not discussed; however must be remembered.  The intention is to educate and remind people of the horror that ensued during the reign of Hitler and his Nazi regime during World War II, where 5.7 million Jewish lives were taken in one of the worst genocides in our history.

When visiting the museum, you will see a chilling reproduction of the dorms of the Auschwitz concentration camp, corridors displaying the narrative with images to accompany the tragic historical accounts of survivors, a poignant names room, films, a study centre, flame memorial, conference room and cinema.

The museum is, in fact, run by members of the Porto Jewish community, who are descendants of family members that were victims of savage brutality at the hands of the Nazis.

This museum was created by the Jewish Community of Oporto (CIP/CJP) in partnership with B’nai B’rith International.  It is associated with the government’s Never Forget Project – National Programme for Remembrance of the Holocaust.
