Jenny Holzer: Wrong Answers at Serralves Museum in Porto

Some exhibitions invite you simply to admire the artwork. Jenny Holzer: Wrong Answers invites you to question it—and perhaps yourself. On view at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art through 1 November 2026, this landmark exhibition marks the celebrated American artist’s first solo presentation in Portugal, transforming one of Porto’s finest museums into an unforgettable exploration of language, power, truth, and human experience.

For more than four decades, Jenny Holzer has challenged the way we think about words. Her instantly recognizable phrases have appeared on LED signs, projected onto landmarks around the world, carved into stone, and woven into public spaces, encouraging people to pause, reflect, and sometimes feel just a little uncomfortable. Her work blurs the line between art and conversation, proving that a simple sentence can be every bit as powerful as a painting or sculpture.

At Serralves, visitors follow the evolution of Holzer’s remarkable career through an immersive collection of works spanning multiple materials and formats. Familiar LED installations pulse with provocative messages, while beautifully carved marble and granite benches invite quiet contemplation. Elsewhere, paintings based on declassified government documents reveal hidden stories beneath layers of paint and gold leaf, while striking sculptural works explore themes of memory, conflict, censorship, and resilience.

Among the exhibition’s highlights are Holzer’s celebrated text series—including Truisms, Inflammatory Essays, Living, Survival, and Laments—whose concise observations remain as relevant today as when they first appeared. Adding a distinctly Porto perspective are two collaborations with local graffiti artist Kilos, whose bold interpretations of Holzer’s words bring an unexpected dialogue between contemporary street art and one of the world’s most influential conceptual artists.

Housed within Álvaro Siza Vieira’s iconic museum, Jenny Holzer: Wrong Answers is far more than an exhibition to stroll through. It is an experience that encourages visitors to slow down, look closer, and leave with plenty to think about—long after they’ve stepped back into the streets of Porto.
