From the recent hotel headlines in Lisbon, it would seem that bigger is better. Large international luxury brands, including Andaz and the Standard, as well as new independent players, have been descending on the capital, taking over entire city blocks in Baixa or grand edifices around Avenida da Liberdade. But within the shadow of all that, the city’s boutique hotel scene is also thriving.

The new kid in town, Villa Dorothéa occupies a cluster of five 19th-century fishermen’s houses in what feels like a miniature neighborhood in the center of Lisbon. Noted Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus signed the project that transformed an 18th-century building on one of Lisbon’s most romantic squares into a stylish boutique hotel. It’s part of the Silent Living hospitality group, which also includes a couple of delightfully minimalist rental villas in the Alentejo and Comporta, and began life as a place for the owners to host their friends when they visited Lisbon. That sense of homey hospitality continues in the unshowy decoration of the six suites, all flowing white curtains and soft nubby textures, and especially in the breakfast spread that’s laid out for guests to enjoy together at a long communal table in the dining room on the ground floor. Verride Palácio Santa Catarina
The 18th-century building that now houses the Verride Palácio Santa Catarina, as well as the square around it, was in serious disrepair when Dutch hotelier Kees Eijrond saw the potential in the ruin. Working with architect Teresa Nunes do Ponte and interior designer Andrea Previ, he undertook a multi-year renovation that transformed it into Lisbon’s most opulent palace hotel when it opened in 2017. Palácio do Visconde
Two restored 19th-century palaces form the structure of Palácio do Visconde, a boutique hotel in trendy Intendente. The decoration is orchestrated around the fact that this was the private home of the “viscount of coffee,” who invited guests to share in his private vision of bourgeois Lisbon, where the coffee industry was booming and cultural life unfolded inside the palaces’ noble halls. Hotel das Amoreiras began as the childhood dream of a small Portuguese boy who was captivated by afternoon tea at Claridge’s in London. In traditional Portuguese architecture, the patio often holds pride of place.
