Thanksgiving is one of the most beloved holidays in the United States. For most Americans, the mere mention of the day conjures memories of family gatherings, turkey fresh from the oven, pumpkin pie with a dollop of whipped cream, football on television, and stretching out on the couch with a full belly.
Like the Pilgrims celebrating life in the New World, Americans (and their friends!) can celebrate life in the Algarve with a very special Thanksgiving dinner at Tribulum Restaurant in Almancil.
Now celebrating its fifth year, this annual event, presented by Tribulum in association with Portugal Confidential, has become a Thanksgiving tradition in the Algarve. Year after year, the dinner sells out, bringing together a delightful mix of Americans visiting the region for the holiday, American expats who call the Algarve home, and plenty of Portuguese and international guests eager to join in the festivities.

An Evening of American Thanksgiving Traditions
At the heart of the celebration is Chef Jonnie Pratt, who has mastered the art of recreating beloved American family recipes, sometimes with a creative twist. From creamy mac and cheese and savory stuffing to broccoli casserole and pumpkin pie, an impressive 21 dishes are prepared for this year’s feast.
The festivities begin at 7:00 PM with a special Pumpkin Spice Cocktail created by Tribulum’s mixologist. American football plays on the big screen as guests mingle over passed hors d’oeuvres, including pimento cheese sandwiches, bacon-wrapped prunes, and rumaki. Meanwhile, Joaquin González entertains with classic American songs.
At the table, the feast begins with crudités, dips, and charcuterie platters before the main event: beautifully roasted turkey, stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce, accompanied by generous bowls of mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, mac and cheese, and more.
True to tradition, dinner is served family-style, with platters passed around the table, second helpings encouraged, and plenty of conversation. Just like Thanksgiving at home!
And, of course, there’s dessert! Jonnie’s much-loved Thanksgiving Pie Bar offers pumpkin, apple, pecan, and Key lime pies, complete with sweet sauces and ice cream.
