There’s never been a better time to visit Portugal’s most iconic wine country. The UNESCO-recognized Douro Valley is, famously, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, and many of its producers have been operating for three or four centuries. But while it’s an area defined by time and tradition, it’s also a place where novelty is blossoming and the hospitality bar keeps rising. What was once just a destination for wine nerds is now also a playground for nature lovers, design enthusiasts, and wellness seekers. The newest hotels have stylish tasting rooms, extensive spas, Michelin restaurants, and rooms that invite you to settle in for a good long time.

Six Senses Douro Valley
More than a decade after it opened in 2015, the Six Senses remains the standard setter for five-star hotels in Portugal. The heart of the hotel is the 19th-century pink palace of Quinta do Vale Abraão, although many of the original 57 hotel rooms occupy sleek new wings that were built into the hillsides. About a dozen newer rooms occupy additional villas and a house on another part of the property. The extensive spa is one of the best in Portugal, and its approach to wellness carries through the hotel, including in healthful food and a fermentation bar full of kombuchas and kefirs outside the main dining room. It also does well with the region’s more famous fermented beverages. Although it’s surrounded by vineyards, it’s not a winery hotel, something unusual in the Douro Valley. (Those vines belong to the neighbor, Quinta da Pacheca.) This allows its sommeliers to choose from all the top wines of the region and the rest of Portugal for the daily tastings, wine-on-tap Enomatic machine, and gastronomic experiences.

Casa do Rio
Casa do Rio, the newer little sister of the storied Quinta do Vallado, is deep in the eastern Douro Valley (or Douro Superior in wine-speak), all the way by Foz Côa. Getting there takes some work, which means it’s an ideal base to settle in and enjoy the languor. You don’t have your choice of tasting rooms within a 15-minute drive, but you do have a feeling of having the valley all to yourself. (And if it’s tasting you’re after, the hotel’s tasting room offers daily guided tastings of Vallado’s various wines and ports.) The heart of the hotel is a flexible metal structure suspended over a small valley—it moves a little in the wind—with six bedrooms, an indoor living room, and the restaurant, which serves homestyle Portuguese fare with set menus (meat, fish, or veg) every day. Four additional guest rooms occupy freestanding houses with plunge pools; one of those has a gorgeous bathroom inside an old pigeon house. These accommodations have excellent privacy, but when guests emerge, they find the same warm, attentive service that greets those who stay in the main building.

Torel Quinta da Vacaria
The Douro Valley got a big design infusion a couple of years ago with the opening of Torel Quinta da Vacaria. The structure, which combines two existing manor houses (one from the 17th century) with a new semi-underground schist building, is the work of Porto-area architect Luís Miguel Oliveira, while the interiors are signed by Lisbon’s Studio Astolfi. Joana Astolfi brought her signature spirit of play and pride in Portuguese heritage to the 33 guest rooms (in color palettes inspired by the landscape and wine), public spaces, two restaurants, and vinotherapy spa. Soon after opening, chef Vítor Matos’s fine-dining restaurant, Schistó, became the first in the valley to hold a Michelin star. Its seven tables are set in a room that feels more like a kitchen, with the chefs in the center preparing and plating a ten-course menu based on super-local ingredients.

Ventozelo Hotel & Quinta
The choice of name was deliberate. The owners of Ventozelo Hotel & Quinta—the Gran Cruz Group, one of Portugal’s largest port wine producers—want to be clear that it’s not just a hospitality endeavor but a working farm. The 18 traditional hotel rooms are spread among three old farmhouses that have been rehabilitated while preserving their spirit; additional accommodations are in freestanding buildings that range from one-bedroom cottages to a grand six-bedroom house. Two rooms occupy large, round concrete vats (balões) that once stored wine. The restaurant is set in the old workers’ canteen, and its menu of country-style dishes, such as codfish loin with a cornbread crust and baby goat with oven-baked saffron rice, also stays true to the place’s roots.

Quinta de São Bernardo
While there are newer, shinier hotels in the Douro Valley, the intimate Quinta de São Bernardo stands out for its warm, heartfelt hospitality. The winery has been owned and run by the same family since 1912, while the main farmhouse, which houses the nine guest rooms, was built in 1756. Seven of those have stunning river views, while the other two overlook the vineyards. Although they’ve added some contemporary niceties, like an infinity pool among the vines and a chic greenhouse for alfresco dinners around a communal table, the traditional touches are also quite charming. Bathtubs have claw feet, and some walls are papered with patterns. The signature wine tasting is a serious affair, with three hours set aside to sample nine of the family’s wines along with a guided visit of the estate.

BEST HOTELS IN DOURO VALLEY
Octant Douro
Even though the Octant Douro hotel isn’t technically in the Douro wine region, it feels deeply connected to winemaking traditions. It sits close to Porto and serves as a gateway to the region—its old name, Douro 41, referred to its spot at kilometer 41 of the river, not too far from its mouth at the Atlantic. That feeling of arrival begins with the lovely views of the terraced vineyards. The main structures are built into the hillside, giving it a low profile within the surrounding landscape, while the newer House Collection includes larger accommodations with kitchens and sometimes with plunge pools. As with all the Octant hotels, the casual restaurant, À Terra, pays homage to the land and hyperlocal culinary traditions, while a second restaurant, Raiva, takes a fine-dining route with six- and eight-course tasting menus.

Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo
The only Relais & Châteaux hotel in the region, Quinta Nova (as it’s known for short), occupies a 19th-century manor house with a chapel that dates from 1795. It was there that early winemakers prayed for the men who sailed their rabelo boats along a particularly treacherous stretch of the Douro to reach the port wine storehouses near Porto. Today it’s much easier to move wine, but the chapel remains a focal point of the estate, which is now owned and run by the Amorim family. Guests can visit the chapel during their stay in one of the 11 sumptuous bedrooms overlooking the centuries-old terraced vineyards and the river below. There are several guest-only salons and a winter garden inside the manor house, but in summer, the life of the place is outdoors, starting with communal breakfasts at a long farm table on the terrace and ending with white-tablecloth dinners in the same verdant space.

Quinta da Côrte
The eight rooms at this intimate estate, which dates from 1814, are timeless and easygoing, thanks to the eye of French architect and interior designer Pierre Yovanovitch. He honored the heritage while adding unexpected details like bold colors and curvaceous lines in the furniture. Wooden carnival masks from the nearby village of Lazarim, for instance, add to an atmosphere that’s both worldly and local. Above all, it’s cozy. A library and living room invite guests to relax with a glass of wine, while the monumental tiled fireplace in the dining room adds warmth throughout the day. That dining room, with its vintage plates on the wall and antique china cabinet in a corner, has a grandma’s-house feeling that pairs well with the menu of rustic dishes enlivened with the estate’s olive oil, homemade jam, and garden produce.

Quinta da Pacheca
Quinta da Pacheca’s ten wine-barrel rooms are justifiably famous for their ingenious use of space, warm wood-clad ambience, and sheer novelty value. But its offerings go far beyond that. The traditional hotel rooms are divided between two wings, one with a classic, romantic feeling (padded headboards, scalloped furniture) and the other more clean-lined and contemporary. And wine isn’t only something to drink here. The Vineyard Spa offers treatments based on grape seeds and natural-origin products, and an artist-in-residence leads hands-on workshops in creating “Winearellas,” paintings that use wine rather than watercolor as the medium. The hospitality group behind Quinta da Pacheca also runs the sleek, contemporary Hotel São José do Barrilário a short distance away.

BEST HOTELS IN DOURO VALLEY
Quinta da Gricha
The smallest luxury hotel in the Douro Valley, Quinta da Gricha aims to live up to that famous line about feeling less like a hotel and more like the home of friends who have very good taste. And in this case, the friends in question are the family behind Churchill’s port wine, who describe their project as “an unlikely child of ancient tradition and youthful vision.” Now the founder’s children help run the business, but they’ve maintained the commitment to warm community and unhurried experiences. The four guest rooms have a soft color palette and an elemental simplicity, with views over the vineyard as their focal point. The property’s friendly dogs serve as an unofficial welcoming committee.
