The Bold Octopus, on Praia do Ancão in the central Algarve, is the perfect prescription for anything that ails you. Open sky, sea breeze and glistening water mixed with delicious cuisine, frosty drinks and friendly staff, immediately puts you in a holiday frame of mind. Whether you’re taking the family to the beach, entertaining a client for lunch, catching a sunset with a loved one or chatting with friends under the moonlight, the Bold Octopus is the ideal spot.
The same team who developed the popular The Cheeky Pup pub in Quinta Shopping, have emulated their successful strategy and fine-tuned it for its ocean front location. A long, raised boardwalk runs from the parking lot to the contemporary structure sitting on stilts in the sand just meters away from the crashing waves. Inside, the large dining room is surrounded by large sliding windows, typically open to allow the outside in. A large, tiled mural of an octopus, created by local artist Meinke Flesseman, emphasizes the brand and provides a sophisticated backdrop for the experience ahead of you.
Given its location, the menu leans toward fish and seafood. Indeed, there are Portuguese favorites like Monk Fish Rice and Black Clams from the Ria Formosa; yet, the selection is largely international with Ceviche (€12.50) and Chicken Gyozas (€11) to start and Tuna Poke Bowl (€16) and Tempura Fish Tacos (€16) as mains. Meat lovers are not forgotten with items such as New Zealand Lamb Chops (€29), Argentinian Filet Steak (€30) and Chargrilled Côte de Boeuf (€60). Don’t forget dessert; the Caramel Dome (€8.50) was scrumptious.
But the restaurant is only half of the experience. The rooftop lounge upstairs is equally enjoyable. Comfy sofas and coffee tables are spread out on a terrace with 360º views over Quinta do Lago and the sea. The amiable staff is at the ready to deliver signature cocktails and perhaps entertain with a story or two. During the day, large market umbrellas provide shade from the sun, and prevent your ice cubes from melting. At night, the starlit sky, cool breeze and energetic music provide an Algarvian ambiance for sipping adult beverages and having a laugh with friends.
To get to The Bold Octopus take the roads south from Almancil toward Praia do Ancão. Closer to the beach, follow the dirt road around to the first public parking area. Once parked, check the posted signs to see if payment is necessary.) No doubt, you’ll see the boardwalk to the restaurant.
