With her iconic playful colors and meticulous dots, Yayoi Kusama has become a global cultural superstar of the 21st century. And now, the largest retrospective of her work to date is on display at the Serralves Museum in Porto. “Yayoi Kusama: 1945 – Today” showcases the artist’s unique vision and personal aesthetic. The exhibition runs through 29 September.
Featuring 160 works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations and archival materials, the exhibition explores Kusama’s career from her earliest drawings, made as a teenager during World War II, to her most recent immersive artworks. The retrospective is organized chronologically and by theme, taking visitors through the creative output of an entire career, divided into major topics: Infinity, Accumulation, Radical Connectivity, Biocosmic, Death and Life Force.
The exhibition is conceived and organized by M+, from Hong Kong, in collaboration with the Serralves Foundation and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, curated by Doryun Chong and Mika Yoshitake, with the collaboration of Isabella Tam. The presentation at the Serralves is supported by curator Filipa Loureiro.
