Comporta’s growing reputation as one of Portugal’s most sophisticated escapes is about to gain another international calling card. From 30 October to 1 November 2026, some of the biggest names in world golf will arrive at Pinheirinho Golf Course for the inaugural Portugal Legends Championship, an official event on the Staysure Legends Tour.
The tournament will mark Pinheirinho’s debut on the international golf circuit, bringing a prestigious sporting event to a corner of the Alentejo already known for its wild Atlantic beaches, pine forests, understated luxury and increasingly impressive collection of resorts and private residences.
Among the players expected to compete are Michael Campbell, winner of the 2005 U.S. Open; Paul McGinley, captain of Europe’s victorious 2014 Ryder Cup team; and Ryder Cup players Jamie Donaldson and Stephen Gallacher, both members of the celebrated European team at Gleneagles in 2014. Additional names are expected to be announced closer to the tournament.
The setting should be almost as compelling as the field. Part of the 400-hectare Pinheirinho Comporta development, the 18-hole Pinheirinho Golf Course was designed by Portuguese golf architect Jorge Santana da Silva to follow the natural contours of the landscape.
Rather than imposing itself on its surroundings, the course winds through rolling dunes and extensive pine forests, with a 3.5-hectare lake incorporated into the design and visible from several holes. The result is a distinctly Alentejo take on championship golf, shaped by the natural landscape that has made the wider Comporta region such a desirable luxury destination.
For Pinheirinho, the Portugal Legends Championship represents an important international debut. For spectators, it offers something rather more appealing: three days of championship golf, legendary players and the relaxed sophistication of Comporta as a backdrop.
